The State of the Cloud
As organizations work to make their software delivery processes and
teams more efficient, many have turned to the cloud. But those efficiency
gains shouldn’t come at the expense of speed, security, or developer
experience. So how are organizations faring in their move to the cloud?
Which organizations are leading the way, and what impacts are they seeing
on speed and security?
GitLab surveyed over 5,000 development, security, and operations
professionals on how they’re using the cloud and the benefits they’re
seeing. Here’s a snapshot of the state of the cloud in 2023:
2023 Global DevSecOps Research Snapshot
The cloud has clearly made it into the vast majority of organizations. Nearly
all (97%) respondents told us they have at least some of their applications
running in the cloud, and 39% said they have between a quarter and half of
their applications running in the cloud. A tenth of respondents reported that
more than three-quarters of their apps are in the cloud — and these cloud
super-adopters may not be the types of organizations you’d expect.
Our findings suggest that larger, more established organizations — which
traditionally have been more risk-averse — are not only warming up to the
idea of the cloud, but in many cases are surpassing the early adopters.
Many development professionals today are responsible for defining,
creating, and operating the infrastructure their applications run on. A third
of developers said they create the infrastructure their applications run on,
and 41% define the infrastructure. Gone are the days of the ops team being
the only one to think about and deal with infrastructure.
This isn’t surprising given the trend towards microservices and containers
that has made it easier for developers to define the infrastructure as part
of their development work, and the increasing number of infrastructure
as code (IaC) tools that have reduced the burden of infrastructure
management.
